Travelling as a couple can be stressful. You don’t plan it to be like that, but it still can be.
For all of the occasions when we see happy couple friends on Facebook enjoying a well deserved break, we also all have that friend that went on holiday attached and came back single. We asked our team for their best tips for a successful break with a significant other.
The most important starting point is to choose a destination that suits both of you. For a trip for just the two of you to work, there has to be something there that you both enjoy. One of our team told a fantastic story of her partner taking her to the Lake District for a climbing trip. She is petrified of heights and has a deep rooted fear of falling. The trip ended with her hysterically crying at the top of a waterfall (they’re still together, they just talk more about their plans now).
It’s also a given, that while it’s great to do an impromptu break, car journeys need to be planned for. Use a satnav, just to avoid arguments and create a playlist for your time on the road. There’s nothing quite like a row over a particularly dubious music choice or short cut to dampen the spirits on arrival at your destination.
Scouting out places to go together can be the most exciting part of the trip and can provide some excellent memories. There’s nothing nicer than recalling brilliant or hilariously painful moments; the restaurant that was supposed to be amazing and was just a bit cheesy or the waterfall that was more of a trickle can provide memories that even the best laid plans can’t create.
Finally and very importantly, take lots of photos and do something with them. One of our team makes a book for every trip that he takes with his partner. He says it’s because they have a terrible memory and will forget all their trips. We like to think that he’s just being rather sweet.
