In the last five years more and more Brits have made the decision to holiday in the UK instead of going abroad. We think they made the right decision. Aside from the obvious reasons of amazing historical sites to visit, stunning landscapes and getting to know the country you live in, one of the greatest pulls has to be the practicality of reducing your travel time.
Travelling abroad with a family in tow can be exhausting. Just making it through airport security can be an epic adventure, tinged by the fear that at any second someone will have a tantrum (and that’s just the adults). The family’s belongings packed into the smallest of suitcases and the silent prayer that you haven’t left that favourite toy at home.
Then there is the plane journey itself, the embarrassment as the person in the seat in front turns round and glares at you, the whispered scolding and the concern that it will all end in tears raise your stress levels to a new peak.
Whilst, we could never argue that a family holiday will be stress free, there is much to be said for a staycation in the UK. For starters there are the obvious practicalities. For families with a car it is simpler to throw stuff in the boot and head off. Fewer concerns about luggage allowances or which liquids you can transport through an airport can be a breath of fresh air.
Additionally, by having your own transport with you, you have a far wider range of options for exploring and are less constricted to a particular resort. The journey to your destination can be an adventure in itself, with stop offs and detours enroute to allow leg stretching, comfort breaks and a bit of sightseeing. Given that anywhere in the UK is only ever a maximum of 70 miles from the sea, you also have the opportunity to quickly return home if an emergency arises.
We think that makes for a much more relaxing break.
